The Muslim Council of Britain today endorsed the United Nations Secretary General’s call for a cessation of hostilities in Palestine. Over 80 Palestinians have been killed in the last five days alone, the vast majority of them innocent bystanders.

Dr Shuja Shafi, Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain said: “Mr Ban Ki Moon is right to warn of a downward spiral of violence in the region. Unfortunately, we have already passed that threshold when the Israeli government sought the path of immediate retribution for the murder of three Israeli teenagers, whose attackers are still yet unclear. We condemn all violence taking place in Palestine right now, but it is quite clear that the Palestinian people are bearing the brunt of the brutality. Innocent people have been killed, as exemplified by the killing of football fans watching the World Cup.”

“If he cannot bring himself to condemn the overwhelming violence meted out against innocent civilians, then we urge our Prime Minister, as a responsible actor in international affairs, to follow the example of the UN Secretary General and call for a cessation of violence on all sides. We urge Mr Cameron to demand that all sides, particularly those with the mightiest weapons, to comply with the Geneva Conventions.”

“We also need to address the pitiful conditions the people of Gaza are living in. In 2010, our Prime Minister rightly described a besieged Gaza as an ‘Open Air Prison’. We should also make clear our support for a unity government in Palestine; that is the only way to achieve peace in this troubled land.

“In this holy month of Ramadan, there is added concern for the ongoing violence throughout the Middle East. Many of our charities will be coming to the aid of those who have been dispossessed and have lost their loved ones as a result of this violence. We urge everyone to donate generously to British charities carrying out humanitarian work in the region.”

“Our concern is about justice and human dignity. We call upon all faiths to join us in calling for peace, praying for peace and working for peace.”
